"The most amazing colourist"

Experience Matters

I have spent over 3 decades honing my skills in oil painting, focusing on landscapes, seascapes, and birds.

My work reflects a strong connection to nature. I have a deep rooted passion for the natural world and have done since my childhood.

Growing up i have always sought out a place to escape, both mentally through switching off and having the focus to explore the art of markmaking and painting and also physically through living in the beautiful seaside village, beach and harbour of Eyemouth on the Scottish coastline until I was 6, then Berwick upon Tweed a few miles south of the border until my early 20's. With the freedom to explore the rockpools, sand dunes, miles of fields and cliffs, waterfalls and rivers I was in my element.

Then at a point when I had to choose which university to go to, the obvious choice for me was Cumbria Institute of the Arts situated in Carlisle in the Lake District. With mountains and Lakes on my doorstep my journey continued with an abundance of opportunity and inspiration.

I've never looked back. Well, I suppose i have really as they are all still my favourite haunts to paint alongside Wales which is my maternal side where I spent almost every holiday in my childhood if we weren't travelling up to Scotland.

Now settled in Morley, West Yorkshire in the heart of the country, I am able to access Britain's amazing scenery within a few hours in any direction. Living next to the beautiful Victorian Dartmouth Park, I can be found walking my 2 dogs Juno and Sprocket at dawn each day taking in the birdsong and sunrise. With an abundance of wildlife including treecreepers, siskins, great tits, chaffinches, goldfinches and the odd woodpecker amongst dozens of other species I am spoilt for choice for what to paint next.

In my gallery and shop you will find many of my inspired pieces of art for sale.

I also sell some smaller pieces through my ebay store as rachel savage art if you'd like to take a look.

I Run my online shop and sells through studio visits selling my nature-inspired oil paintings and taking on commissions.

Now a bit about a few of my projects.....

I was commissioned to run a 2 day Workshop in the town centre for Morley Arts festival in September 2021.
This project involved working with pre-booked local children. Each child created their own small landscape painting with guidance, using stencils and acrylic paint on canvas. The groups were of 8-10 children at a time (in 30 minute slots) and i worked with them in my gazebo in morley town centre over 2 days.
This was extremely popular and extremely successful. My plan is to continue running workshops after working with children ever since.

If you'd like to book me to run a workshop painting birds or landscapes please get in touch for prices and dates please email me at

I have also worked on backdrops for school plays and taught a voluntary art club after school in fountain primary school a few years ago which was booked up within a few minutes.

I have worked on an Arts Council project with children making a freize with ceramic artist Jenny Morten in Darlington which involved a large group of children working together to make a piece of art which became a ceramic tiled arch above the school entrance.

I ran art workshops with children, creating paintings in my home studio and have had a stand at many art and craft fairs over the decades including the Small Animal Show at Doncaster race course (this was the largest show / competitive event in Europe at the time) which ended up with a 4 page article and my small animal paintings being in Guinea Pig Magazine as their featured artist which was great and amusing.

I regularly paint private commissions, most commonly pet portraits and scenes from photos of favourite or memorable places to the client. For this i need to work closely with people and communicate effectively, listening and staying in touch throughout the process as some Commissioned artwork has reached as far as Australia and Switzerland so communication and updates are key.

I tend to work from photographs, creating landscape seascape and animal oil paintings in series anywhere between 10 and up to 40 paintings. Wildlife and Birds in particular are a huge passion of mine.

I have trained at York college on the foundation in Art course gaining my pgce Pcet in Fe from the university of Huddersfield.

I love working with young people creatively and have painted for over 30 years completing my Fine Art degree (in painting) at Cumbria institute of the Arts in 1999.

I am really Interested in art as a creative therapy and helping children and adults to be expressive through colour, texture and mark-making as a way to problem solve and explore freely and creatively, uninhibited as it can be both therapeutic and help with enrichment.

I would love the chance to somehow bring art and expression to everyone and apply my skills and passion to those who may benefit as it's always been a lifeline for me and helps to switch off and stay focussed and relaxed which I think everyone could benefit from.
